Yearly Goals for 2019

I always enjoy making a yearly goal list - personal and bookish. However, I've decided to be kind to myself and break my goals down to achievable chunks. If I complete one goal, I can move on to the other while also trying to maintain the last goal. It's kind of like how my Pick-a-Theme Challenge works as well as The Happiness Project. Each month I pick something to focus on. If I get to complete it fantastic, I can move on to the next while trying to maintain my last goal into the new month. Basically, I want to maintain habits. However, I know that I'll be interested in things one month more and not the other like how I can get obsessed with reading but hardly read the next few months.

I do have three overall goals in which one depends on availability. My main goals for 2019 are:

1. Take care of my two medical issues. (These aren't serious issues but they are bothersome and if left unchecked at least one of them could be a problem in the future.)

2. Graduate with my Master's degree. (I haven't said this on the blog, I don't think, but some of you may know from some posts that I was very unhappy part of last year and this year. I ended up changing career goals from teaching to being a librarian. It's something I thought about in college before, however I thought it would take too long to achieve, my parents were discouraging of it, and at the time public libraries in my area weren't looking great. However, it's a good time to get in and although I plan to work my way up I'm less stressed out by this decision than I was during my short time teaching. I hope I'm finally able to move on from something I consider a failure.)

3. Move my way up at the library. (I am currently working part-time and going to school online. I really want to get a full-time job even if I'm worried my procrastinating habits will mess myself up with school. I'm gently pushing myself, but pushing myself nonetheless. I enjoy my work and want to do/learn more. This is the goal I may only achieve if 1. I realize that so many people work full-time jobs and go to school plus have children so you can do it too 2. there is a job available for promotion and not just reassignment.)

Now to my monthly personal goal. I only plan to post more goals if I complete the last one so here's my first monthly goal:

Organize.

Yep. That's my goal. Very basic. I want to accomplish this goal because I'm an adult and it needs to be done. I don't want to stress about the amount of stuff I have that I don't need. When I donated around fifty plus items from my closet and drawers earlier this year those areas became so neat and pretty. It was such a satisfying feeling. Also, if I'm organized in my own home then that should transfer to my work (I'm actually surprisingly organized at my job right now. With extra workload as I move up, I want to be able to maintain that streak). Lastly, I plan on moving out in a few years and I don't need all this extra stuff I don't even use.

How will I achieve this goal? Well, I have mini challenges for myself.

1. Clear closet. (I have removed the clothes I don't want however, I still have extra things in there, I need to vacuum, and reorganize my clothes the way I had them when I first cleared out my closet.)

2. Reorganize drawers. (I have my clothes organized in certain places in my drawers. I do have them mostly organized. I just need to fix a couple of them and keep it that way. I also need to go through two of the drawers that are my junk drawers. Also, the top of my drawers are a bit of a mess so I need to sort that out.)

3. Clean out my purses. (I like collecting papers for reasons. I don't know why I don't deal with them the day I put them in there but it's whatever. It needs to be done.)

4. Organize the shelves. (I want to read a few books one my shelves this year because they are overflowing. I don't have too many books I haven't read compared to the ones I have. Maybe twenty at most I'm guessing. I have shelves everywhere in my small room and I need to make decisions. Also, would it kill me to dust once in a while? It would also be smart if I catalog all my books. I like lists so the likelihood of this happening is very high!)

5. Organize underneath my bed. (I hate the storage underneath my bed. It easily gets dusty and I just throw things in there. I organized it a little bit a while before but I can't even get to one side of the storage area. I need to declutter and for the love of God, wipe up all that dust!)

6. Sort through the other closet... (Yes, I have a closet out in the hallway. My dad put a whole unit there for my papers and teaching stuff. I do enjoy teaching so anything I think I'll use for my future children that I can't recreate or part with frankly, I'll be getting rid of. Hopefully I can store it all in my actual closet. You know you are unorganized when your father keeps on making/giving you storage solutions. I'm honestly not as bad as I was before, but I need to get all this done to finally improve my living space.)

7. Clean up any odds and ends. (I have some things around my floor that need to be cleared up and put away. I have this box with art things I made while in a art class for teaching that I need to sort through. There is also a lot, A LOT, of pens, pencils, colored pencils, and other stationary around my room and in boxes. I can't wait to get rid of them.)

I might post before and after photos if I am not feeling too shy and of course if I finish it all.

My bookish and blog goals have the same vein to them as my personal ones. I want to work on them a month at a time. I have come up with all the books I want to read next year cause I'm insane however, I give myself the right to change what I'm reading whenever except I must choose a theme each month (I already have. I like creating lists okay.). I do have one main goal for my blog and two for my bookish.

My main blog goal is to post at least once a week. I don't care if it is a rant, if it is about a movie or song. I want to write my heart out on that one post a week.

My two main bookish goals are to read twenty-five books (I have planned for more however, if I can only get to my theme reads I'm good.) and complete the challenges I created. For my theme challenge if I complete only one theme month then I've done it, I made it, I'm amazing. For my royal challenge if I complete two books then I've done it, I made it, I'm amazing.

I do have challenges I have in mind that I want to join but only if I've read half of the challenge goal by the end of June AND I feel like I've been reading consistently. I seem to very rarely complete challenges I say I'm going to do. I create a whole TBR list but never get to them and that annoys the heck out of me. So if I inadvertently read books a part of a challenge organically or try to work on a challenge before I officially participate I will allow myself to participate in said challenges. You can read more about those challenges here.

So that's it. My personal, bookish, and blog goals all neatly organized and laid out. As I am every start of the year, I'm very excited to work on these goals in the new year. Will I complete any of them? Follow along as my year progresses. I'll try to post updates as much as I can to keep myself accountable.

Have you set any yearly or monthly goals for yourself?

  1. I think it's a great idea to break down goals into manageable parts. It can seem overwhelming to set this huge goal, but if you work at it in pieces, it can be easier.

    1. My exact thinking. It's working well so far although I am going a bit slow. I might have to continue this goal into February.

  2. So many amazing goals! Just because you want to change careers does not mean you are a failure at all! You are awesome and brave for trying something new! It took me two years to get my masters in library sciences taking 2-3 classes a semester, working two part-time library jobs the first semester, and then one part-time library job for a bit, and then my last semester I got a full-time librarian job and I made it work, but I am very glad to be done. lol What I am trying to say is that you can for sure do it! From my experiences and my friends', having a part-time job in the department you want to work in will help get you a full-time job later on when you have your masters. Good luck! :) What is your dream public library position? Do you know yet? If you have any questions feel free to message me. I have worked in public libraries for 5 years and got my full-time Teen Librarian job last July. (Sorry this comment is just me rambling forever.)

    1. Aw, thanks (: It's just been hard with thinking/hearing my family members say I shouldn't give up on something I'm over with. It's sad to move on but I would be a better teacher to future kids than anything else. I'm doing the same thing now. I don't know if I'll go for librarian right away since I'm still worried over my last full time job. I would like to get a library assistant job but I guess I would go with whatever's available as well. I just want to be a Librarian 1. I think I rather work with teens or adults but most likely adult services. No, thank you for letting me know! I appreciate it. Is it your dream to work with teens?

  3. Good luck with all of your goals. Isn't it amazing how many things seem to pile up. I try to fill up our van a couple of times a year and we never miss the items. Less stuff makes organizing so much easier. Happy 2019!

    1. I'm mostly a paper hoarder it seems. I got rid of a huge amount of clothes last year. Around 50+ items. I just need to finish the job elsewhere. That's great that you donate so much. I do want a emptier place. I feel more relaxed an you are right, it is way easier to clean.

  4. I do have some goals, but I'm going to post about them later in the month. Good luck with grad school! I went to school online for a Master of Science in Library Science too. I worked part time at a public library...and then for awhile, worked part time at an academic library (at the same time). It's a lot, but it worked okay. Going to school and working full time would probably be tougher though, and I have no experience to share with that.

    1. I'm looking forward to reading them Lauren (:
From those three dots it doesn't seem like you liked working at public libraries. I'm working at one now and I really enjoy it. The place I'm at is a good neighborhood with lost of people who love to read which is nice. So you worked two part time jobs? That must have been tough. I think if it is a full time job in one pace it won't be that bad especially if it is just one step above my position currently.

  5. Sounds like some great goals :) I like how you are breaking them down to make them more manageable. That is really smart! I never set goals because I never stick with them but maybe if I make them tinier it will work :D

  7. Lots of great goals! Good luck with everything.

I was a classroom teacher for 15 years and now I am the school librarian/media specialist. I think you will love being a librarian. It is wonderful to be surrounded by books and technology and helping people find answers to their questions. I am not sure what your focus is- school or public or other- but I think you will love any of them. :)

    1. That's amazing! I've found a lot of people in my same situation where they did teaching for a little while then moved on to do something else so I feel better about that whole situation. Working at the library, especially the branch I'm at, has really been a dream come true. I like helping people and books. It's more of a natural fit for me. Thank you for your kind words!
