One month later, I'm still behind on my reviews. I am going to end up doing a 6-month review on all the books I've read, so that should cover everything. Meanwhile, I wanted to post about how I am doing with my reading challenges.
Last month, I revealed my reading challenge percentages. My challenges just help keep me accountable in reading diversely per age group. I was at 16% for Reading My Age, 31% for Read YA, and 17% for middle grade. I decided to remove books I wasn't as interested in reading. Then I added books that I had read, as well as others that I am interested in. Right now, I've gone up in percentages in every challenge. My focus was on reading adult romance so that's why it has gone up by 15%. I've read a lot of YA this year so I am surprised it's almost at 50% read. I really need to work on middle grade, especially as a children's librarian, but I have certain books I am more interested in.
Upcoming Reads
I'm just going to get straight into it. By now I've already read Brewed with Love which was alright. I liked the setting and magic but everything was pretty predictable. I had Bad Cheerleader as an upcoming read last year. Somehow I've had this book out basically this whole year it feels like. It will not escape me this month. It does sound up my alley. I just have a hard time getting into physical copies.
Bookclub
I am participating in 2 bookclubs. One of them is Millennials Ruin Bookclub. Our theme is immigrants, thanks to America's 250th birthday. I am pretty sure it's based on my influence on things we talked about, so I am pretty ecstatic about the theme. I didn't have anything on my reading list about immigrants but I found 1 I've always wanted to read - You Sound Like a White Girl - and another I found perusing Libby - The Tiny Things are Heavier. Very happy to read and discuss books about immigrants. I also plan to join another online book club for Steamy Lit called Debi Leer Mas Libros, which is their Latino book club. I am reading High Sticking the Heart, which happened to be on my reading list for the year already.
Most Anticipated
I decided to tier-rank the books I am most excited about because I get so boggled down on what to read next sometimes. I really have wanted to read Let's Do This. It seems fun and a mindless read. On the flip side, I want to read the second nonfiction book I plan to read this year - Sounds Fake But Okay - mainly because I am exploring that part of myself. I mean everything can stem from anxiety but what if it's more than that? I love that title too. It's perfect. Last, I've been enjoying the hell out of reading Latino books and I don't see that many more romance books out there that I am interested in but then I found Up Close & Personal which is by a Mexican author and has a Latina main lead. It sounds fun and I'm looking forward to reading it soon.
Second Tier Excitement
I only have By the Bootstraps on the second tier and not the first because I have taken too long to get to it. I am still very excited to read about cowboys and POC main leads. Diversity in books is always more interesting. Next is a book I just heard about - How to Love You When You're Gone. Like the Ana Holguin book, this one seems to have a white male love interest which I try to avoid, but it does sound cute and there are just so many books by Latino authors whose premise I enjoy. I love that it has pink and checkered backsplash and diner setting just like Up Close & Personal. Great minds think alike!
Third Tier Excited
For some reason I haven't been reading that much middle grade compared to prior years. I did just read a queer one that I absolutely loved though. I picked The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest which has such a unique premise and has either won an award and/or is highly star-reviewed. I know it's got some prestige attached to it and I want to make sure I am reading some popular reads or books that are getting pushed the most towards readers by publishers. Last is Auntie Q's Golden Claws Nail Salon. Another book with such an interesting premise. It looks so cute. I think it'll be a very me read.
