Kids Graphic Novels // InvestiGators, Steve L. McEvil, and Blue, Barry, & Pancakes

I don't read very young kids graphic novels only middle grade. But if I am going to recommend books I need to see what graphic novels kids are reading. We got some boy humor, silly situations, and cute characters. Let's start with my favorite one out of the bunch:

Blue, Barry, and Pancakes are best friends, but sometimes friends make mistakes.

One day, when the gang goes to the beach, Barry and Pancakes lose Blue’s beloved beach ball. They come up with a plan to get it back, but things go way off course. Now, these pals will have to go inside a giant whale’s stomach, crash a pool party on an alien spaceship, and survive Duckzilla’s volcanic birthday bash if they ever hope to see Blue’s beach ball again!

Blue, Barry, and Pancakes
is a fast-paced graphic novel featuring an unconventional friend group that go on a wild chase for Blue's favorite beach ball. Blue has a collection of things he loves and one of those things is his beach ball. When Barry and Pancakes start playing with it the ball ends up getting eaten by a whale! The friends are on a mission to get back Blue's precious beach ball in a silly adventure where they get up to lots of hijinks including crashing a pool party on an alien spaceship. The super cute characters, silly adventures, friendship, and colorful, eyecatching illustrations throughout makes this an easy recommendation to young readers.

MANGO and BRASH are the INVESTIGATORS:
sewer-loving agents of S.U.I.T.* and scourge of supervillains everywhere!

With their Very Exciting Spy Technology and their tried-and-true, toilet-based travel techniques, the InvestiGators are undercover and on the case! And on their first mission together, they have not one but two mysteries to solve! Can Mango and Brash uncover the clues, crack their cases, and corral the crooks—or will the criminals wriggle out of their grasp?

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the series or if I saw it on Ion or some obscure channel like that but InvestiGators instantly reminded me of a cartoon I watched briefly as a kid. The concept of an Alligator team being InvestiGators is hilarious and adorable. I wanted to see if this was an easy recommend. (I have actually recommended this already to kids who like Dog-Man because of the art style.) This is perfect for mid to older elementary age readers. There are some good bits of humor. I particularly liked the Doctor Copter bit and the origin story. Very silly and also age appropriate. Kids will get a good laugh with this series.

Lean into your wicked side in this full-color graphic novel series about a middle-school super villain (in training) who must choose between saving his town and doing the most horrific thing of all--teaming up with the good guys.

Hi! My name is Steve L. McEvil, and I am THE GREATEST SUPERVILLAIN IN THE WORLD! Or…I will be. It’s hard to take over the planet when you still have a bedtime.

Right now, my grandpa Tiberius McEvil is teaching me how to pull off my nefarious schemes. Though lately someone has been doing the job for me. These weird stones have appeared in town. Professor Stinger won’t stop droning on about wormholes. And no one is more villainous than my new neighbor Vic Turry. That guy is just so…NICE! Barf. Even Sierra, who rarely looks up from her geology books, is impressed by his good guy routine. But I’ll show them all. No one can outsmart Steve L. McEvil! (Yeah, yeah, I know it rhymes.)

Welcome to the most boy humor graphic novel you can expect with lots of farting and silliness. I'm sure middle grade boys will love this. It reminded me at first of Dexter's Laboratory but in this case the parents were aware of all the inventions and family history of evil schemes. Steve comes from a long line of supervillains and he plans to continue that line even though his plans to get revenge are not genius level. What I liked about this was that eventually he got together with his crush and his archnemesis on a school assignment. They find out about a plot to get a truly evil guy to come to Earth and reek havoc. Steve battles with his good and evil side which was an interesting plot development. I won't be willingly continuing this series because it was tedious to get through but I know who to recommend it to in the future.
