What I Want to Read This Fall

There are ten books I really want to get to this fall. Will they all epitomize the fall cozy or spooky spirit? Not necessarily. But they all bring up a lot of excitement in me. I have a few books that have Latina characters. I won't be able to read them all during Hispanic Heritage Month but I wanted to read a good amount this fall in general. I have a thriller, a horror, a science fiction book, and a few fantasies in there too. Here are the ten books I want to read this month:

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

I just started listening to The House in the Cerulean Sea. I don't like reading books this hyped. I assume they aren't going to be as good as everyone says they will be. I decided to just try it out since I could use a sweet book like this one. I'm about 31% in and I am very optimistic because first of all the concept of an orphanage with magical children sounds like a perfect read. I'm really liking the social worker and our narrator Linus. I get where the book is going with him. This is probably more of a summer book but it has the cozy and magical vibes of fall as well. I just hope it continues to be good.

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten

My favorite fairy tale is Little Red Riding Hood, I love retellings, and I love romances. Let's do this! Honestly so ecstatic to read For the Wolf even though I'm also terrified I've overhyped this. I think I am just so used to YA retellings and YA has been sucking for me lately. But you know what I'm giving this a go. It's in my wheelhouse and I'm hoping for the best.

Goddess of Filth by V. Castro

I finally just bought the paperback copy of this book. I've been anticipating reading the Goddess of Filth all year long. I've done a terrible job of really wanting to read more horror this year and then not being in the mood for it. But this is the one book I've still been eager to read the whole year. I'll be reading it in time for Hispanic Heritage Month. It's a possession and friendship story. Possession movies aren't really my thing but for some reason, I have it in my mind that I'll love this.

A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie

I'm tackling A Little Hatred again. I tried reading this I think last year and got 100+ pages in but I was so into quantity, not quality last year and most of this year, to be honest... I still remember all I read. I was enthralled by this book. It was just taking so long to read but I want to give myself time to read this. I don't care if I don't read anything for a whole month except this book. I can tell I'm going to love this if it has been this memorable a year later. I absolutely love the industrial age type of setting with knights. Like literally the best setting for me personally. There are a bunch of characters but I still remember all of them which says so much. I know I'm going to have a good time with this.

America Chavez: Made in the USA

I found out about America Chavez and another Latina superhero this year. I ended up going on a deep dive of Spanish superheroes in comics and it's sad how little of an amount there has been. I just love this cover and love that she is going to be in a Marvel movie with Doctor Strange. I don't read as many comics as I would like to but I will take exception for ones starring Latina characters.

Wonder Girl by Joëlle Jones & Jordie Bellaire

Doesn't she look like such a badass? She looks like she can destroy you with a single look. Wonder Girl is another Latina superhero I've never heard about who has a graphic novel coming out in the fall. I love that there is a Marvel and DC character on my list. I hope there are more cool Spanish superheroes being created and being put into the forefront.

Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi

I was looking into doing a reading experiment where the Storygraph recommends three science fiction books. I decided to nix that but this sci-fi sounds right up my alley. Space exploration, a cast of unlikely heroes, and a romance. It even reminds me some of the Firefly TV show. Every time I reread the synopsis I get excited all over again so I need to read Ascension already.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

My mom doesn't know it yet but I'm planning on picking The Guest List as my next pick for our book club. She loves mystery/thrillers and this one specifically seems like something she would totally love. She actually tends to like hyped books too so I don't think I can go wrong. As someone who doesn't read hardly any thrillers, I'm even interested in this one. I do like multiple characters and the thrills a mystery like this one can give me so this is a perfect pick for both of us.

The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez

Another Latina girl on my list! I love the concept of The First Rule of Punk. When do you ever read about a character who likes punk music? The physical book also has a bunch of cool black and white images and it just seems like probably the coolest middle-grade book I've seen in a long time.

Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros

I enjoyed reading The House on Mango Street so much last year and I've been dying to read Caramelo since then. I've been off and on anticipating reading this book. I think since I've created so many TBR's it has really messed with me being able to read books I am into at that moment so I've put off this book. I love stories revolving around family and with a Latino family, this should be a fun one. Mix that all in with Sandra Cisneros's writing and I have high hopes.

What are you reading this fall?
Do you have any particular themes or vibes you are using as inspiration for your reading?
