May 2019 Reading Wrap-Up

May was a bit frustrating, at least the end of it was. I ended up deciding to not do one of my classes during the summer so I'll be extending my Masters to Spring of next year. A bit disappointing but what can you do? I think I'm just tired of school. It would be nice not to think about the next assignment I have and just relax on my days off. I completely failed at reading my theme reads this past month and instead read a ridiculous amount of picture books. I think I was struggling to read in general but I'm hoping June will be different.

I read three contemporary fiction, two mysteries, two manga, one graphic novel, one fantasy, and seven picture books which is a total of sixteen books! Twelve of them were on my tbr list which is great. I went crazy deleting books from my tbr list that I knew I wasn't going to read anytime soon and I'm now at 189 books to be read. I might get it down to 100 this year if I'm lucky.

Impossible Music: I asked for this on NetGalley because it was getting bad reviews on Goodreads and I wanted to see for myself if it was any good or not. I did like the story and the emotions it brought out in me but on the other hand it was very slow read that could have been better executed.

Poseidon: Earth Shaker: This was a backlisted NetGalley read. I know it's years and years old. It ended up being really great. I enjoyed how Poseidon's POV was written.

Losing Leah: The ending was extremely confusing and was out of nowhere. I had fun and there were many twists which may or may not have been a good thing.

Death on Tap: A slow cozy mystery that needed more action.

Small Town Hearts: Although somewhat unrealistic elements, there was just something about the town that left me ready for summer.

Peaches: I thought I wouldn't like this one but it was an enjoyable story that made me contemplate things I want in my life. I saw myself in the three main characters who all had distinct personalities.

Children Make Terrible Pets: I had this book on my tbr list since forever! It was a cute story with wonderful illustrations.

The Magicians: I like the TV show better. I thought it would have been done better if it didn't center only on Quentin's perspective.

Little Witch Academic Vol.1: I loved the Netflix series and loved this manga adaption. There are side stories in here that aren't on the show which was a nice addition. The characters and artwork were perfect.

Little Witch Academia Vol. 2: Another great addition to the series I did notice one inconsistency with the art as well as some of the storylines being mentioned only briefly from the TV show and replaced by a new one. So I would say that you would have to watch the Netflix show to get the full story.

Petite Rouge: A Cajun Red Riding Hood: Loved this! A great addition to a child's book collection. The accents within the writing were really fun.

Undercover Ostrich: Very funny story with lovely illustrations.

It's Not Hansel and Gretel: I liked that the characters and narrator argued throughout the story but I still felt something was lacking. Wonderful artwork as usual by Josh Funk.

The Octopuppy: Not what I was expecting but still a nice story about friendship, being different, and seeking forgiveness.

A Little Chicken: A simple story about a chicken being brave and facing their fears. This was alright.

Carnivores: Might be scary for some. Not what I was expecting but not a terrible read either. The illustrations were the best part.
