Last year was my trial-and-error year.
2024 was the year I got my reading mojo back.
I have been tracking my reading since 2011. This was my third-best year concerning page count and number of books read. In the last three years, I've consistently read fewer than 100 books but I finally made it above that mark. My average star rating was great, landing on a 3.85 average for the year. I thought my average star rating was usually around the same amount but I did have a few low years where it has gotten as low as 3.03. So I am very happy with my high average rating. It means I am more intuned with what I want to read.
I got back into mood reading with some structured reading mixed in like I had hoped at the beginning of the year. At this point, I want to have more structured creative reading this year. I want to focus on my 2025 Reading List but in a fun way. I know I didn't follow through with some fun posts I wanted to do this year but that is where my plans are. That's why I want things to be more structured with some random reads mixed in. This is how I am feeling now and I feel good about it so who knows how I will feel in the upcoming months. But saying this I need to learn to move on from an idea and not sign myself to do some overtaxing challenge. I want a structured but chill reading year. It makes sense in my head, okay...
There's one last thing I did not focus on that I want to bring with me this year. I think now that I've finally gotten back to really enjoying reading I am going to be commenting on fellow bloggers' posts. I've said for years I've missed it but now it's time to actually be active.
In 2024 I read...
148 books
DNF'd 2+ books
34,620 pages
54 audiobooks
11 graphic novels
16 manga
5 rereads
N/A Spanish book
24 adult books
44 young adult books
46 middle-grade books
34 children's books
25 picture books
My top 5 genres read are Fantasy, Contemporary, Romance, Sports Fiction, and Horror. I read no historical fiction this year which was one of the biggest changes. Although maybe 2 of the fantasy picks could be historical... The second biggest change was sports fiction a.k.a. Blue Lock took over a spot thanks to it being a sports fiction manga series.
- Fantasy - 53 books
- Contemporary - 19 books
- Romance - 16 books
- Sports Fiction - 15 books
- Horror - 7 books
In 2025, I want to read at least 10 books of each genre. I fear unless I look back at this post I am going to forget this goal. I'm going to try to make it a point to mention how much closer I am to my goal each monthly wrap-up.
It's funny that I was almost at 25% of adult books read in 2023 and this is what happens this year... I don't really care if I get to a certain percentage of adult books read but again I don't want to neglect reading them. As long as I don't go lower, I am happy.
Also, wow that manga really boosted my YA books. I can't believe it almost beat out middle grade which I'm trying to keep as my top audience read.
My audiobook and ebook usage went up which means a lot of time listening to books in the car and reading lots of ARCs! I hope to keep physical reading as my top format in 2025.
I took such a dive in reading the last couple of months. I'm going to try to not overwhelm myself at work this year. Fall was a tough season for me. I actually don't know where I will be then because I have to move this year so... terrifying. I wonder how that'll impact this graph next year.
My highest page count read was in May (again!) with 6,957 pages read.
My lowest was 639 pages in December
I got so close to my 2022 pages read which was 7,084 pages. I kind of want that to happen again but rather not burn myself out.
An impressive star rating average as I mentioned at the beginning of this post. I chose my books wisely this year. I think I can do that even more in 2025 although it's always fun to have surprise books.
I went up by 23.3% which is insane! I do know the manga and picture books made that happen but a win is a win.
Did I achieve my goals?
I wasn't going to talk about goals because I gave up on them except... ARCs. My goal was to read and review 12 ARCs. I got so close but didn't review my 12th book until this month so technically a fail but way better than I've done in a while. I want to read 20 ARCs this year. I want to continuously make this number higher each year (within reason) because I am a children's librarian and it does help filter out books.
Overall, I am excited about the new year. I did so well this past year once I let go and read whatever. 2025 will be my best reading year (except that one year I read The Hunger Games for the first time)!
Let me know how you're reading went in 2024.
What are you looking forward to achieving the most in 2025?
