I watched a video of someone trying someone else's reading routine and was determined to try it out for a post and reading experiment. It kind of went haywire but it prompted me to read more. I started using a reading app to track the amount of time I'm reading a book or listening to an audio which I love. This may just be my new reading experiment! The app is called Bookly in case you were wondering.
Books Read
- Finlay Donovan is Killing It - This is the first five-star read I've read of the year that wasn't a reread. I've been highly anticipating reading this so for it to be this good makes me so happy! Review to come later in July.
- Maya and the Rising Dark - I was looking for a mythology-centered book like The Lightning Thief but didn't get it with this one. I thought the pacing was off. There were potentially interesting plot points/drama cut off when it would have been much more interested if Maya kept a secret or if there was more showing not telling. I think it works perfectly for kids who are too young for The Lightning Thief but it's not as well done for middle-grade readers.
- Arsenic and Adobo - This was the second amazing mystery I read this week. Well, I actually listened to this one. I wasn't sure about it but once I got to the 25% mark I was in it. Review to come later in July.
- An Age of License - Just finished this graphic novel this morning. I cared for more of the existential crisis/uncertainty thoughts on being in your mid-20's more than the actual travelogue. I'm at the same age the author was when she went on this trip so that's why. I do really desperately want to travel to other countries. I think Covid in general has made me realize what I'm missing. I want to go on adventures so this was a nice inspiration for my daydreaming.
Want to Read
- So This is Love - I was reminded earlier this week that I still have yet to read a Twisted Tale book. I like to have an audiobook around so I can listen while I work (when I can). I thought about this Cinderella retelling and listened to the sample audiobook and knew this was my next audiobook. Of course, American Betiyah became available for me the very next day but I'm hyped for this so it's my priority this upcoming week.
- A Girl Like Her - Just thinking about this book made me go on an hour-long internet search for more romances to read. I think also the romantic interests in Arsenic and Adobo made me crave romance. I've prioritized more on my to-read list so unless my mind diverts expect more romances on this blog in the future.
- Witches of Brooklyn - Because I've noticed such a need for juvenile graphic novels in our branch library I ordered a massive amount this year. The other day 30 came in and I picked out five. So now I'm excited to read a bunch of adult romances and juvenile/teen graphic novels... I'm weird. I know. I love the artwork in Witches of Brooklyn and I can tell it's going to be amazing!

- This is Not a YA Book // A Discussion on the Audience Shift of Teen Books
- Books by the Ocean Blue //Cozy, Beachy Books to Enjoy this Summer
I'm also possibly going to be writing either one review of Finlay Donovan is Killing It or a double review including Arsenic and Adobo.
Artist Feature
This week I am featuring the artist Shafiq Cromwell who's only 23 and is an amazing character designer.
What genre have you been really into lately?
I enjoyed Finlay Donovan. I wasn't sure how I would feel about it, but it had a lot of humor, and I love laughing. I need to put a hold at the library for Arsenic and Adobo. Everyone is raving. I need to check it out.
ReplyDeleteOh you will definitely love it if you liked Finlay Donovan is Killing It.
DeleteOkay you have me wanting to figure out my reading routine! I don't feel like I really have one though I'm sure I do. I'm going to have to start paying attention. I've heard so many good things about Arsenic and Adobo. I really need to get it. I like the idea of tracking my reading. It might keep me from getting distracted by random stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting when you start paying attention to it or trying to create one. It made me want to read more but not like everyone else. I would like to read more before bed though. I have been trying to track my YouTube watch time because that's my biggest distraction. I've been reading and writing more posts so far so it seems to be working.
DeleteSo This Is Love is one of the few Twisted Tales I haven't read - should be fun!
ReplyDeleteOh yay! I'm glad I picked one you haven't read yet 😄
DeleteI have Arsenic and Adobo and need to read it soon. I liked Finlay Donovan. I think I'll like the sequel even more though!! And I LOVE Lucy Knisley.

You won't regret it! I think so too about Finlay Donovan. There's a lot of interesting ways the author can take her story. I only wish I read more of Lucy Knisley (:
