Five friends venture into the woods and what awaits them is the start of an adventure. A battle with three-eyed foxes leads to questions. Questions about what "Beware the holy kitten" can possibly mean and what sort of summer this is going to be. All Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley know is that they are in this together.
I'm going to the state the obvious right now. Comics are so short. No wonder my brother has a whole hoard of them packaged away in boxes. It's going to take reading so many comics to get to the really thick of Lumberjanes' story. Each comic is going to be a small snippet in the Luberjanes story line. Saying that, I wouldn't really mind it if I had access to more of the series because it doesn't feel like much is going on in this one issue.
Now with my little rant on comics done; let's discuss the story shall we? The five friends from the Roanoke Cabin (hopefully this won't take a literal path) are fighting monsters when we first meet them. The monsters aren't explained. The girls also just happen to have the skills to fight them off. This is the start of a series so I'm not bothered that none of this is explained yet. I just expect it to be later on. The story is leading the girls to a quest so it looks like I'll get to know more soon.
The personalities of the friends are as varied as their looks. Jo is a leader type, April is the cute, fun-loving one, Mal is freaked out by the whole experience, Molly is the worrier, and Ripley has an impulsive attitude towards everything. Ripley also doesn't have a care in the world. I don't know how I will be seeing growth in her, but I hope I do as well as with all the characters. I feel like I see cliche's in all of them though. They remind me of characters that I have already read before. Although, I don't really know them well enough yet to conclude that's the case. I do really like the personality of April. She reminds me of Mabel from Gravity Falls and in this instance I don't mind the similarities. She acts silly yet she knows how to handle herself. I don't have a clear opinion on this series yet because it's just started. I hope I'm able to get to know the characters and their purpose at the camp soon enough.
When you're a scout, nothing is more important than being prepared, but how do you prepare for legions of supernatural creatures threatening to beat down your scouting camp's door? Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are about to find out! It's just supposed to be a normal day at camp with games and a bit of canoeing, but when the girls find themselves separated from the rest of camp they realize there really is a lot more going on and it might be a unhelpful river monster that gives them the key to figuring everything out.
Like Lumberjanes #1 we start back off in an arbitrary place when we see Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley again. Before it was the woods and now the friends are headed canoeing with their camp counselor. I saw a lot more of the character's personalities in this one. Molly is now becoming a favorite of mine. If I was anyone out of the group I would be the one who worries all the time and that's Molly. I do hope she gets a moment to shine. She might start to blossom already because it looks like she and Mal are crushing on each other. I'm still not sure about how the series is going to flow. It feels very disjointed with the first two issues. I'm not overly excited about it either so I will only continue on if I get the chance to borrow the rest of the issues from the library. I do have to say that the art is delightful. The coloring is spot on.

I think I prefer graphic novels. These sound really good though! I may have to give them a try.
ReplyDeleteGraphic novels are what I lean towards more as well. I think it's nice to have the how story there or at least most of it. Same with mangas although mangas usually are perpetually long.
